Stocking of graylings to Malše river

kopie6 We have new project in cooperation with Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters of the University of South Bohemia (FFPW USB) in České Budějovice aimed on the new approach in production and stocking of grayling.  The main goal is to test stocking of fry in the age of only 3 months directly to fisheries. Fish are bred in small carp pond half on artificial prey and half on natural food, so they hopefully can easily adapt to conditions in the real river.  We stocked 700 fish marked by the fluorescent elastomer tag to Malše river and we will observe mortality and growth rate. Similar fish, but in the age of 5 months, will be stocked  to the same place in September to compare both groups.

This is start of one of my life dream and one of my challenges in position of fisheries manager in South Bohemia, which is reintroduction of grayling to my favourite rivers, which were devastated  by cormorants. Nowadays, I plan to stock more that 100 000 fish to Vltava, Malše and Blanice rivers annually during next 4 years and we will intensify faith against cormorants. I hope we  will find money in our budget for this plan. I will write detailed article about this problem during long winter evenings, just now you can keep your fingers crossed small graylings in river.

lipan5-copy We have small group of fishing mates and we have a on-line fishing diary. Everybody can share his fishing experiences with other friends and we have something to remember during long winter evenings or during hard days in work :-) Before the new season will start, I´ll look to this diary and translate  some of my older articles.

I have been working on a project aimed on fish-passes in rivers in Czech republic during last two years. It was connected with field work and I had always my fishing bag in the car. It was no difference on a nice spring day in October 2010. I finished assessment of the last weir in Lužnice river at 2 p.m. and at 2:30 I was parking at the confluence of Černá and Malše rivers. After I was out from car, I saw olives flitting above the river and heard munching graylings. I made new world record in changing to fishing clothes and preparing of rod and I was hurrying upstream to my favourite pool. Water was low and crystal clear and fish were spooky, after I came to the bank through bush, they stopped rising. I sat down and observed the river, calmed down and enjoyed warm sun and beautiful nature. Fish continued rising immediately as carpet of olives was too attractive. I started with 4 m long tapered leader and 0,9 fluocarbon tippet, but after I left two of my three best flies in bush, I changed to 0,10 STROFT, which was also acceptable by fish without problem and which was more resistant.

I got over ten graylings (one bigger fish  twice :-) ) and two browns in one hour and next I moved downstream. After I lost last gray V- Olive size 18, I tried the olive one, but without success. So I looked to my box and found palmer size 18 with orang tag and it was also killing pattern this day. Fish were taking it also fished like wet fly in the end of drift. I got another 20 fish, so that day I caught over 30 fish including 4 graylings 35+, 4 browns, one small rainbow, few dace and the rest were smaller graylings. I met no soul, what a nice day, I love fishing !!!
