Opening of the season 2021 in Vltava 24

p1030840 Short thaw on Sunday January 3rd was irresistible and after lunch I went to Vltava 24 to open the season 2021. Water was low and clear, and I was surprised, that river was relatively busy, there was a fisherman in every good pool. I the camp I met Honza, owner of the camp, he was just finishing fishing, he caught two rainbows and one small pike on streamer, and he boasted to me that he caught on the first of January a nice rainbow of 60 cm in the most fished place in the middle of the camp :-)

I decided to move to the upper part of the fishery as there was nobody. I caught four fish in 20 minutes on a black streamer, what a great opening day, first fish was edible, but it was first fish of the year, so it had a lucky day :-) Next arrived Jirka, we were fishing pools under weir together, but without success. I decided to go home, and at my car I caught last fish. Jirka caught 6 fish and the last rainbow had 56 cm, so he invited him for dinner :-)

I wish all to have a better year than the past one, however fishermen are modest, if we can go fishing, everything is all right and we accept all restrictions :-)

December fishing and Xmas time

Leden 15, 2021 - 9:59 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1030429 In the first half of December we were facing Covid, but luckily we caught a mild version, so I had one day fever and chills and next I was OK. So I still had time in the second half of the month to visit Vltava 24, sometimes alone, sometimes with Honza or Tobi, I caught every time 4-6 trouts in one hour and half, few fish had over 50 cm. I also tried spinning rod and used different baits and streamers and I caught few smaller pike. It was nice, I´m always satisfied if I catch at least one fish in this time of the year. Weather was relatively mild, but after Xmas it cooled down and during my last visit, the river was very cold, on the surface was floating ice and I had not any single take. Not a bad closing day of the year :-)

But my friend Tobi was very successful in December, in one week he caught three fish over 90 cm on a twister, one pike of 115 cm, one carp of 90 cm and another pike over 90 cm. Franta Hanák added nice barbel, I borrowed pictures from their FB profiles.

During Xmas holiday we visited our weekend house at Lipno Lake, we enjoyed ice skating and I made nice pictures of ice floes washed ashore, and what was my surprise, that there was a smaller place without ice on the surface and there was a fishing boat on it, are they brave or mad? :-) We call them patients :-)

Ohře River, River of Rivers

Prosinec 4, 2020 - 6:03 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1030213 I visited Ohře River last weekend of November. Milan Janus called this river “River of rivers” as it is the biggest trout river in the Czech Republic which flows from Nechranice Reservoir, its water is relatively cold as the reservoir is deep and it is full of nutrients, the river is therefore full of weed and it hosts a lot of food for trout. It is the only river in our country, where you can regularly catch a brown trout over 50 cm. Almost everybody of my friends has already visited this river this season, but I found time at least now at the end of the season. I asked my friends from České Budějovice for some advice and I also called local otters Ondra and Venca.

p1030248 I arrived at about 11 o´clock and Ondra and Venca were waiting for me and they took care of me like a baby, I was gifted by successful flies (local version of PTN jigs) and brunch, they shoved me best places and let me go first. We caught about 40 fish between us, mostly browns, the best fish attacked 50 cm as you can see on pictures, I caught only two fish of about 40 cm. We caught also few rainbows, small brook trout and grayling. Not a bad day in the very end of the season, hopefully I will come again next year.

It is great that local angling authority in cooperation with fishermen’s initiative introduced relatively strict rules of fishing (protection of brown trout and grayling) , proceeds regular stocking and mainly cooperates with hunters in fight against cormorants. More big browns in river means better natural reproduction, which is key. Well done.

The last picture I made for my kids to show them how is produced hop, the green gold of the Czech Republic and the essential ingredient of our beer :-)

Vltava 24

p1030159_1 I went again to Vltava 24 to the middle of the town of Boršov. I decided to start with the pike-fishing and next to try to catch a rainbow. I started at about 1 p.m., river was dirty because of the “river works” upstream and I did not have a take from a pike for an hour, so I decided to catch a rainbow. I had no take for another half an hour, I was hot and thirsty as the sun peeked out of the clouds and I was “over dressed”, I had a lack of caffeine in my blood, I was simply out of sorts and decided to go home and never return :-) At the car I met a colleague and he told me, that the day before, river cleared before sunset and fishing was not bad. So I took off my jacket and jumper, vent to the local bistro and bought small beer and double espresso “to go” and I headed for the ripples between two bridges in totally different mood. A slip remained me that the local dog-breeders like to use the path along the river …. but nothing to do, I hoped that sand and gravel could clean my felt sole and it could bring me luckiness. The river was really clearing quickly, the low sun illuminated the surface, simply paradise. I had first take on the very first cast and finally, I landed 8 rainbows in the last hour before the sunset. I took the last rainbow home and exchanged it for two pheasants with my colleague from work who is hunter :-)

So what is the lesson? You never know what could happen during fishing and if a fly is in the water, a take can always come …. and water and sand wash shit even out of the felt :-)

Vltava 24, the pike fever also struck me

Listopad 4, 2020 - 3:20 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

Days are shorter, so I prefer to visit Vltava 24 located backyard to save time. Moreover, fishery has been regularly stocked by decent rainbow since September and hosts also big pike. I usually take two rods, one spinning rod with a big streamer and one fly fishing rod with team of nymphs (one of the nymphs has usually big orange or pink collar from fritz :-) .

I usually start with pike fishing, I decided to use spinning rod with brained line, to cast big streamers with fly fishing rod is exhausting and I thing, that strikes with spinning setup are more save. I caught few pikes up to 65 cm, it is interesting, that pike always stay under bank under grass or a tree, and takes immediately after streamer falls to water, or on hang, when you start lifting the fly from water surface or change direction of movement. Never in the middle of the pulling. One fish of about 1 meter jumped from water just when I re-casted the fly and it closed his mouth empty, I had almost heard attack and full underpants. I will be back soon ….

Rainbows takes honestly, average size is 1 kilo, so I use 5-size Z-Axis and 0,18 mm tippet. The best combination is orange tag on dropper and blob on the point, water is unfortunately not clear as there is some “river works” upstream, so dry fly fishing is nothing special despite the high season of olives, it is better only during weekends, when the machines rests.

Heavy rain during the last three days raised the discharge in river, so next weekend I will probably visit river under Vyšší Brod, where the water is clear, or Květoňov lake.

Otava 6

I visited the Trophy section in the Otava River under the ruin of the Rábí Castle, I met there Honza who was guiding Katka, she had never caught tiger trout, the hybrid between brown trout and brook trout. This fishery is famous for this fish which are produced by a local hatchery.
I prepared two rods, one for a lighter fishing mainly for dry fly (Hanák Superlight 3), and one for a little harder work (Sage Z-Axis 5). I have to say that it was good team of rods for this water, and I caught a nice fish with all the method which I used. I got few graylings (max 38 cm), two brownies and also few smaller rainbows on the dry V-olive, some nice rainbows on the Orange tag nymph used on dry-dropper system, and also few rainbows on nymph and blob, and finally I got one bigger brown and one tiger trout on the streamer (small bullhead), in total I caught about 20 fish, not a bad day :-)
Honza and Katka focused on streamer for the whole day and got few bigger fish, the tiger is really nice and hard fighting  fish.

Second half of summer on Lipno lake

Říjen 4, 2020 - 3:55 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

Covid restrictions limited travelling this summer, so apart from our trip to Slovakia we were staying at Lipno Lake for the whole summer. I visited a river a few times, but I focused more on the predatory fish in Lipno Lake. I was fishing both with artificial lures and on a life or dead bait, I preferred fishing with a dead bite on the Drahkowitch system. I caught many zander, few pike and perch and also one decent asp, I thing, that I have never returned without a fish. But one day was exceptional, I was fishing on life roach and bleak and had few takes from smaller zander. Smaller zander rarely takes fish seriously and runs away like a bigger fish (size limit of bite fish is 15 cm), it only sinks floater, stays on place, and releases the bite and again. If you strike immediately, you usually miss or has the fish hooked in jaws and you can release it without a serious injury. So I caught two small zander and also missed few takes, so I had the last life bite fish  – roach of about 18 cm, so I used a bigger floater and released the fish to the lake.  After one minute, the floater sunk by about 15 cm, I thought that it is work of the life bite, but it moved slowly and sunk deeper, so I expected again a small zander, so I struck and what was my surprise when I felt a big resistance, fish was heavy and I could not pull it from the depth, I estimated zander of 1 metre, but finally after about 10 minutes I saw a decent pike jumped from water, I was lucky as it not smashed my 0,30 mm mono tipped without wire,  it had 90 cm. It spat out the dead bait fish, so I decided to give the bait fish another chance and cast it back to water. After 5 minutes, I caught 65 cm zander on it and could go home, some days are happy days :-)

We also enjoined a lot of windsurfing, mainly in the end of August and in September, it is a pity  that we could not go to Lefkada this year, hopefully next year will be OK.

Vltava 24

Září 28, 2020 - 8:40 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1020424 I was a little busy during summer and had not so much time for fishing, however, some fishing trips were made and some pictures were taken. Autumnal fishing season is coming, so I have “new October resolution”  to make one actual post and one retrospective from summer every week.

Last week I visited our trophy water Vltava 24. I had only 1,5 hour, water was low and clear, so I decided to try dry-nymph setup and go slowly upstream from camp. First rainbow, a decent fish of about 55 cm, I hooked above one big stone in my favourite  pool as usually, it took 15 m of my competition nymphing leader and 10 m of floating line and finally smashed my tippet under a branch. So I made new leader and moved to another place. In a hole under a willow I caught 2 nice fish of about 45 cm and in the pool under the weir another two. I was very satisfied and hurried to my car to pick up my son after his basketball training. Not a bad start of thew autumnal season in Vltava 24, I´m looking forward to the rise for olives.

Váh River, Revúca River, Slovakia

Srpen 25, 2020 - 11:59 am Komentáře nejsou povoleny

I again visited Slovakia with kids and friends for one week summer holiday in June, we love hiking in the beautiful Slovak mountains, I can call Slovakia as “Land of flowers, butterflies and kind people”.

Michal was on business trip to monitor concurrence business with mineral water in Slovakia occasionally in the same time :-) , so we went to Revúca River together to wet our flies. Revúca is famous for great native grayling population, mainly in lower parts, so the target fish was grayling over 40 cm. We caught together about 50 fish and few fish was on the edge of 40 cm, majority was over 30 cm, the best fly was the traditional Czech nymph. Fish fought very strong, so the 3-size Hanák rods and 0,12 tippet were ideal. At about lunch time I moved to a hiking trip, but Michal continued fishing, his best humorous performance occurred in one nice pool upstream from the parking place, he was swimming a little through the pool at first, and after pouring water from his shoes he caught there grayling of 46 cm :-) .

Váh River was more difficult, first day during high discharge (86 cm in the profile Bešeňová) I visited spot where we caught 30 fish during Big River Race one year ago, I had not a single take, so I moved to a different place, another blank, and third blank I gained in my favourite place from last year. This is fishing :-) But on Saturday the discharge was decreased to 50 cm, I caught about 20 fish including nice brownies and hard fighting rainbows of 40-50 cm, I had to use tippet 0,16 mm as the fish smashed  thinner tippet already during the take. I was also keeping 50 cm loop of line under my finger during nymphing (like during salmon fishing) which gave me a little space to lift my rod and cushion the hard takes.

We returned in August for Big River Race, during practice days we enjoyed fishing, but during competition was our performance not so good comparing our victory two years ago. Nothing to do, we have to improve our skills for next year.

Vltava 29 with Jarda and Michal

Červenec 8, 2020 - 7:47 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

Michal with his family visited Lipno Lake for one week holiday, So I took Michal and his dad Jarda to the trophy part of the Vltava 29 under the dam of the Lipno lake. We caught many trouts including few fish over 40 cm and one almost 50 cm and few brook trout, the best was for me pink ribbed jig with cooper head, bad luck that I had to leave earlier as the wind started blowing ….
