Květoňov lake with my buddy Michal

Březen 25, 2019 - 11:58 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1390113 We had heavy rain two weeks ago which melted snow in mountains and we had a small flood in the Vltava river and Lipno Lake is almost full, so also the discharge from Lipno Lake is high and discharge in Vltava 24 is 60 – 100 m3/s, too much also for a brave tall fisherman :-) But we have Květoňov lake and we visited it with Michal to wet our lines and breathe fresh air. We caught about 20 fish between us in 2 hours, all on lures and intermediate lines, and mostly on light colours of lures like white or yellow, majority of fish on hang. Good practice for the lake competition season.

Some pictures from last visits in Vltava 24

The weather is warmer and warmer, so it is impossible to resist and not to visit river at least once a week. Here are some pictures, I have nothing interesting to say, blobs and blobs, also barbel and chub take blobs :-)

Windsurfing in February? Why not!!!

p1380655 I injured my leg one week ago, so I could not join the first windsurfing party of the year, but the forecast of wind of 20 knots and water temperature of 17°C was irresistible invitation to the Dehtář pond, one of the famous spots nearby České Budějovice. So at least I made few photos.

Short visit of Vltava 24

Únor 21, 2019 - 11:15 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1380398 I visited river after work with Michal, in one hour and half we landed 10 rainbows between us in size 40 – 55 cm, few on blobs but majority on smaller jigs, and we finished in the local pub by a great snack, no more words are needed, simple perfect life  :-)

One fish was injured probably by a cormorant, but it looked that it could survive, injury was not deep.

I found on FB some pictures of my friends –  Vojta, Ivan, Franta and Franta – from the same water  :-)

Vltava 24 with Funky FlyTying

p1380227 I have been working hard for the last two weeks as we have the deadline for reports from our projects in the end of January, so the cold weather and the high flow in the Vltava river did not mind me. But, today at three in the morning, I finished the last report and sent it to my colleagues for the last check, I was sleeping till ten, next I arranged some other important things, and at about half past one after lunch, I noticed bright sunshine penetrating the heavy cloud cover. It was the best impulse to stop everything, to pack my fly fishing gear and despite the the high flow to head to the river. Honza and Franta could not join me, so I was there alone. The flow was about 28 m3/s, but the water was relatively clear, no problem for a fisherman of my figure, and I decided to try a team of the jig-blobs which I recently tied from the fritz which I got from my friend Toby Merigan, Funky Flytying.

p1380200 I saved blank by the third cast …. and in one hour and half, I had 10 takes, I touched 7 fish, and the last one I touched relatively strongly to the head and invited him for dinner :-)   Franta visited me on the way home from work, he arrived just in the time when I was finishing my fishing. He made the photo of the last fish and he asked me to lent my rod for few casts while I was changing my clothes … and he caught two trouts from the bank :-)

Just now I´m studying comments from my colleagues in the reports, it will be again a long night …..

Vltava 24 again superb

p1380067 January is always busy month in my job, we are finishing reports from just finished  projects, writing annual reports from running projects, planing work for next season and also starting new projects. I was not thinking about fishing at all, more over it has been blizzard or rain outdoors since new year, and river has been murky. But, on Thursday, I finished some important work and arranged a lot of things and I noticed sunshine penetrating the low clouds after the lunch. img_6259 I checked flow in the river (18 m3/s, 1,2 °C) and outdoor thermometer (+2°C), it looked promising, so I packed my gear and called Tobi (too busy) and Honza (too lazy) to join me, so I went fishing alone. At about 2 pm I was at river, water was surprisingly relatively clear, and in two hours I caught 15 rainbows and one chub on team of blobs, more over I saw one rising fish (and got it on the emerging blob :-) ), the biggest fish had about 50 cm. Honza finally came to visit me and he made the picture with the nice silver trout. At 16:30 I was back in front of the screen of my computer with brain full of fresh oxygen and blood  full of adrenaline :-)
SAGE Z-Axis size 5 and tippet 0,16 mm fluorocarbon HC worked well, however, 0,18 mm would be maybe more sure for this hard-fighting fish.

p1380099-kopie Next day the situation was similar, I finished a meeting with a major of a town close to České Budějovice at about 13:00 and bright sunshine did not allowed me to go back to office. I called Tobi, we set our meeting at 14:00 at river and I was hurrying home for equipment. At 2 p.m. we were in river. Finally, we hooked 18 fish between us in two hours, I caught half fish on blob and the other half on the orange tag size 16. Memorable were my first which had about 2 kg, the next two fish caught together on the team of tequila blobs :-) and the beautifully coloured trout caught on the nymph.  We finished our fishing session by the great goulash in local pub “Poslední štace” I thing, that this season is running more then satisfactorily.

All best in the year 2019

pf-2019-mh-eng I would like to wish all fishermen everything best in the new year, especially good health, as little stress and as much time for fishing as possible :-)

The celebration of the end of the year 2018 and of the beginning of 2019 took place on Vltava 24, as the New Year, so throughout the year

p1370956 Mild weather enabled us to enjoy another two superb days fishing in Vltava 24. On the New Year’s Eve we met with Franta Hanák, Franta Tobiáš and Honza Vender at the railway bridge. Flow was a little higher but water was relatively clear, Franta Hanák decided to try to catch a pike, rest of the group focused on nymphing. We caught 8 rainbows between us and Franta finished the day by a decent pike. The great day and also the great year we finished in the local pub in Včelná by a great lunch.

p1370980 On the New Year afternoon I picked up Tobi, he had just sobered after the party, he made me coffee and lunch and at about 14:00 we were at Vltava river in Boršov. Water flow was a little higher comparing yesterday and water was also slightly muddy, as there was a rain during the night. When we were preparing rods, we saw a rising fish just in front of us. Tobi immediately covered it by first cast and got it by an olive emerger. To be honest, we really did not await that we could catch the first fish of the new year by a dry fly. Another rising fish he got on the blob :-)
p1370970 To be short, in two hours we hooked 21 rainbows of size 40 – 60 cm, no more words are needed, simply superb day. Most fish we caught on the orange blob, this is always a great pattern in this water in winter. After fishing, we noticed that the local pub in the camp ”Poslední štace” owned by our friend and fisherman Honza Čerkl is open, so we finished the great day by the delicious lentil soup and goulash. Keep it up!!!

End of every season always belongs to our trophy water Vltava 24

Prosinec 19, 2018 - 10:04 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1370703 In the end of every season, I always focus on fishing in our trophy water Vltava 24 which is located 5 kilometres far from my town, days are short, weather and water are cold, so it is not good for a long trip and a long fishing. Few hours fishing after lunch are always enough, and you can have really nice day. More over, Honza has small boat in one part above a weir and there are many big pikes. I was not lucky for a big pike, I caught only few smaller babies, but Honza got few monsters attaching 1 m border and followers which did not take were much bigger, of course :-)

p1370855 But we also tried trout fishing, if the water was muddy, I successfully used team of traditional flies – orange blob jig and squirmy :-) , and in the clear water, small jigs size 14 – 16  worked best and also the traditional czech nymphs of the size 12 in the green colour.

p1370863 Top of the season came in the last week, when a warming came after short frosty period and water was very clear. First afternoon, I caught 14 rainbows size 40 – 50 cm and one chub in an hour and a half, all on the long nymph using 0,16 mm fluorocarbon Hanák Competition and small jigs size 16 tied on reinforced Hanák jig hook size 16. I used SAGE Z-Axis rod size 5, my favourite rod for the trophy water. I could not believe, how many fish is in the water, I was fishing maybe 60 metres of river, in fact, I caught all fish in 3 pools.

p1370937 I returned back after one day, with the same setup, and after two nice fish of about 40 cm I hooked something heavy and I knew, that it would be real trest of the equipment. After about 5 minutes, a monster let me lift it to the surface of the river, and I thanked to Saint Peter that I took the landing net with me :-) After another 5 minutes, I got it to the net. I release a lot of fish, but I´m sorry, this was an exceptional fish and a great dinner for two families :-) The fish had 64 cm and 3,48 kg …

I always smile, when we discus in our regional board or in the main board of the Czech Angling Union about fishing rules with people who don´t go fishing. I always say, go fishing, and you will see, what is better for fishing, don´t sit in the office and don´t listen liars and whimpers!!!

Broadlands Grayling Classic

Listopad 12, 2018 - 11:22 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1370582 We were walking trough the green forest last night of our September workshop, as every night before, and we were talking about our future plans, and Ben Bangham invited me and Martin to the competition which he organises with friends in the River Test, yes THE RIVER TEST, downstream of Romsey.

The conversation was approximately like this:

Ben: Hey Milan, it would be great pleasure to invite you and Martin to Broadlands Classic

Milan:  I would like to go, but I have to ask my boss whether I would like to go :-) I´m leaving for Norway tmrw, so we can arrange it after I will return.

Martin: Yeaaah!!!  zeleny-les-3

Andy: If you come, so I’ll pay your flights.

Milan: Super, Andy, thank you very much

Martin: Yeaaaaaah!!!

Adam: Yeaaah!!!

Milan: Is it Farmoor fishable this time of the year? It has been always my dream to visit it.

Simon: If you come, I will take you to Farmoor, I´m best fisherman in this lake

Milan, Martin: Yeaaah!!!

Somchad: Guys, it is great that you are coming, I´m cooking breakfasts and lunches during the competition, next round of mint-shots is on me.

Milan, Martin, Ben, Adam, Andy, Tom: Yeaaaaah!!!

praha Martin remembered only that he is going to England, but no more details …. :-) But we arranged everything, Franta Hanák equipped us with the new brand Superb XP rods, and on Wednesday October 24th evening we drank the last Czech Pilsner beer in Prague airport and two hours later we met with Ben at Heathrow.

On Thursday, we were practising the river. It was very cold and northern wind did not increased perceived temperature. Martin had leaky waders, so I borrowed him one of my waders as I always take two for foreign trips. But I found, that I left all warm underpants at Ben´s house, so Martin borrowed me some. … We were drinking coffee and chatting with friends for about one hour, but finally we moved downstream to find a suitable place to fish.

p1370573 River was relatively busy as a lot of teams utilised the last day of practice. We found a suitable place at an island and I started to prepare leader, and I pulled out my competition leader from the nymphing line …. But I tied it up to the reserve reel with the floating line and it was possible to fish with it. Martin jumped to the water and caught a nice brown on the very fist cast. I stopped making of the leader and ran to make a picture of the first fish of the trip. Before I finished my leader, Martin was calling me back as he got a nice grayling … Finally I could go fishing, I found a nice hole between weed in the channel behind the island, first cast, take, I missed and all the leader tangled in the willow above me… It was to high, so I had to cat it, “kurva !!!”.

p1370597 I sat down to a bench, breathing slowly and observing swans and after five minutes I decided to make a new leader. Since then, it had been fine (I caught few nice graylings and small trout and salmon parr) before I went into a deeper water and found out that also my waders were leaking …. But it was not necessary to go to depths during the practice day and we really enjoyed the fishing. Later, we were fishing one nice pool for about one hour, and we caught many graylings, one sea trout and one nice brown, I could estimate about 25 fish from one pool. We decided to move a little downstream and another couple of fishermen replaced us in the hot spot, Martin told me with a slightly ironic tone ”I´m curious what they would catch after us” …. and one of them caught brown trout of about 60 cm on the very first cast just in the place when I was staying two minutes ago ….

p1370618 After the lunch we moved a little upstream to see another part of the river, and after about ten minutes of fishing I heard strange sounds, I turned back and saw Martin sunk in the water to the neck trying to climb to a bush at the bank :-) clay soil and weed are treacherous :-) so we had not any dry waders :-) Martin moved to the fishing hut to change his clothes and I was looking for next suitable places for fishing, which was extremely difficult in the river full of weed. But in the rifles, just above the sandy and gravel places, I caught some graylings. Finally, we found some flies which were working, and also typical places where to look for fish.

p1370641 On Friday, the river was closed to give fish a rest before the competition, so we managed the trip to Farmoor. Simon picked us up at Bens house at 7:30, he booked two boats in the Farmoor II, I was in one boat with Simon and Martin was fishing with Ben James Fox. We had a great English breakfast in the sailing club and after some difficulties with the engine :-) we headed to the upwind part of the lake together with sailing boats and windsurfers, I estimated gusts of the northern wind up to 15 m/s. . … Simon prepared nice snake flies, we decided to fish close to the surface, finally, we enjoyed sunny ten times , ten times windy and ten times heavy showers, and we had 9 fish in the boat, and if I had heard Simons recommendation and used stronger tipped, we would have three more, what a nice day :-)

After fishing we moved to the hotel close to the river, We had a nice room with a queen bed and one big duvet, pure Martin :-) but Ben asked somebody in the reception of the hotel and Martin could sleep at sofa with his own duvet :-) In the evening we attended the draw of competition and opening banquet and we met a lot of old friends from all over the Europe.

I thing, that it is necessary to explain system of the competition. They were competing 40 teams created by two competitors, three sessions fishing and three sessions controlling. Both competitors fish the same peg. After end of the session, the team which was fishing in the first session is controlling the same peg in the next session and the same team which was controlling them. So you can see another team fishing before you or after you. Which can be sometimes very useful, and sometime very painful :-)

John Emerson brought new waders for Martin, I created special underpants from plastic bag, so we were looking for a nice dry day full of fishing :-) Day D started with scraping of ice from the cars windows and by the great breakfast prepared by Somchad. The northern wind was strengthening and definitively not worming up :-) We were controlling during first session the peg No 20 (the most upstream peg, as pegs were marked bottom up), so we had enough time to warm up and to prepare rods. Spanish guys caught only three graylings and one sea trout, and they shoved us two productive places. In the peg 19, Max was controlling Tom who could not catch one big grayling which we could observe from the bank in the deep pool at the border between our pegs. Max shoved me his leader, and as I offer “life time warranty” for clients of our workshop, I rebuilt his leader for the pool and chose flies from his fly box. Five minutes after the start of our session Max got the queen of the pool :-)

p1370585 In our peg 20, we caught 11 graylings, two nice browns and one sea trout, and the 11 countable fish was enough to win the session. Ben said “very good” :-) . After great lunch, we were controlling peg 9 just under the fishing hut. Rising olives provoked fish to feeding activity and the team Manningford Monkies caught 16 fish and lost maybe another 10, so they hooked majority of the active fish in the pool. Adam, who was helping with the organisation, commented their approach by “I thing that you guys are making Czechs sad :-) ” . Mainly the double hook up 1 minute before the end of the session was the most painful thing for us:-) After them, we caught only 8 fish which was not good and we finished in the 8 place of the session.

Lynchy offered us to give a lift to the hotel, but he did not know the way, so he decided to follow Tom, but he also did not know the way …. but after 45 minutes of sightseeing tour we reached our hotel, and when I took my mobile from the bag, I found 5 miscalls from Ben and Martin found keys from Ben´s car in his pocket :-) But finally, the river was only 5 minutes from Hotel, so somebody took Ben to the Hotel for keys …. and we finally successfully met in the pub for dinner. In the morning we had to pack all things as we had to leave the hotel, and when we arrived at 7:10 to the parking place in front of the hotel, nobody was there :-) But Ben returned for us and we still had enough time to enjoy the great breakfast :-)

On Sunday morning, we were fishing first session in the peg 2, which was not bad. But we again caught only 8 fish, and gained 8th place in the last session and also in the final ranking. Finally I won a nice soft shell jacket in the raffle. Andy was so kind and took as to the airport after the competition and we even found possible cooperation in our businesses  :-)

heathrow To summarise our fishing, we had not enough time to practice in the dirty water full of drifting weed when all competitors jumped to the water and we did not have some effective flies for this conditions. We won only first session, in the clear water in the peg 20. Our draw was not bad, at least for the third place, but we were not fishing for 100%. It was great privilege to attend such friendly and well organised event in the famous River Test, in which you can catch grayling up to 45 cm, brown trout up 60 cm, sea trout, monster chub or even salmon.

To summarise our trip, after all the difficulties, we were very happy to sit in the pub in the airport. Thanks to the great care from our friends and mainly from Ben, Andy and Simon, we enjoyed the trip very much despite of the all difficulties and I hope, we had not done the shame, next year we will have more experience with this very special style of fishing.
