p1320962 We could not resist another nice day although water in Vltava was high and a little muddy  after heavy rains … we knew what to do … to use native imitative patterns  …. orange blob and squirmy worm :-) Tobi caught 2 rainbows on blob, same me, and later in the afternoon we saw few rising fish, we thought that there are rainbows, but I covered one rise with my team of “flies” and I get good nase on the squirny, so I thing, that were not rising fish, but nase splashing water while raking the bottom. Not a bad day, 5 nice fish in 2 hours.

Next I went to Lipno to check cottage and I made few nice pictures

pf-2018-mh-eng Dear fly fishing friends, first of all, I wish you Happy New Year full of love, happiness, contentment and, of course, fishing. From year 2018, I will cooperate on all activities connected with fly fishing with Patrik Jedlička under one brand CzechFlyFish.com. Patrik Jedlička is my friend, great fly-fisherman and owner of the luxury hotel Annín at Otava river. If you would like to visit us, let me know and we can arrange details.

January 1st – first trip of the year to Vltava 24

p1320833 Mild weather on 1st of January was simply irresistible, so I called Tobi after lunch weather he had already bought fishing permit for Vltava 24. Answers was “YES, of course, Im just packing things” ….. and we met at the bridge with Šindy in 15 minutes. After windy morning, the west wind calmed down and sun was peeking out of the clouds, it was about 8 degrees above zero, simply ideal conditions for winter fishing. p1320844 In 1,5 hour, we hooked nice 11 rainbows of size 45-55 cm, few barbel and coarse fish, not a bad start of the season, what do you thing? I saw also few hatching olives and midges and also a rainbow rising. Do you know another water in the Czech republic where you can catch fish such quality in January? As the new year, so throughout the year :-)

Vltava 24

Listopad 26, 2017 - 1:57 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1320688 We aimed last few visits of our trophy part in Vltava river on the pike fishing. I did not have a special pike rod, so I asked my friend Pavel, who is rod-builder, to cat my old lake rod by 20 cm and “sharpen it”. Tying of big streamers is interesting and fishing with them is hard work and strong rod helps. I was not so successful like Franta and Honza, but I caught few smaller pikes and rod worked well. One week ago we observed with Honza a big crocodile from bridge and estimated its length of about 1 m, and last Thursday morning Honza called me that it is exactly 96 cm :-) .

Last Saturday was not so cold, so we went again to Vltava with Honza, this time to the lower part of the river stretch. We started with pike fishing, but I had only few follows of smaller pikes.  In the end, I decided to wet also some trout streamers because the place looked like a home of a big rainbow, my leader was not ideal :-)   sink tip line,  1 m of fluorocarbon 0,50 mm, 30 cm pike wire, and next 2 m of 0,22 fluorocarbon with two black-orange streamers. After few casts I got strong hit to the line and decent rainbow was jumping above the surface of the river. What a surprise, finally I missed another take and one fish broke my leader, so it was time to go home. Hopefully we we’ll be lucky for few more mild days before the end of the year.

Vltava in Český Krumlov

Listopad 26, 2017 - 1:31 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1320634 Maybe one of the last fishing days in the season. After few outings of pike fishing with big streamers, I was missing light nymphing with my new Hanák superlight rod, and also looking forward to test new colours of beads. Nice weather was irresistible, so I went to Vltava river close to Český Krumlov, at first I caught few graylings in the town, it was good message, that grayling is able to survive and to growth after stocking. We stock them regularly in the age of one year and size of about 15 cm inside of the town, where they are sheltered against cormorants. Next I moved a little upstream and caught few browns, chub and also about 20 rainbows. Not monsters, but nice fish in good condition, three of them I took home and made dinner for our family.

People visit in this stressful time psychologists, psychotherapists, therapists, life-coaches, or church, I go fishing, river is my church, therapists and coach :-)

2 hours at Vltava 24

p1320580 I was tying some big pike streamers yesterday evening (the best one will be definitely combination black and fluogreen with orange blob on tail :-) so i could not resist to test them today after work. I took also nymphing rod to catch a rainbow for dinner. Weather was nice, nobody was at river, but fish did not cooperate well. On nymph, I caught only a few monster dace and roach, not any take from rainbow. With big streamers I explored all suitable pools and windows at banks, but I recorded not any interest, I did not even see a pike, but finally, like Jakub Vágner, I caught one smaller pike by the very very last cast, however, it was not like Jakub, he always catches on the very last cast a monster fish :-) p1320582

Team Finland Ladies

p1320532 I was asked by Maria to help ladies team Finland during practice before EUCH. Maria, Kanerva, Aino and Petri arrived in night and I was waiting for them in České Budějovice and next we headed to Herbertov. We arrived just before midnight, and after we took our things to rooms I opened some Pilsner beer and Slivovice from my Slovak friends and we started “Welcome party” which transformed at midnight to my “Birthday party” and I got nice hand-knit socks in Finnish colours :-) .

Next morning we started fishing at Herbertov, I presented my own setup of nymphing leader and nymphs and also nymphing technique, luckily I caught few browns and brook trouts, thanks my friends :-) . Girls and Petry also caught many fish, foggy morning changed to nice sunny day, fish were also occasionally rising, so it was beautiful morning. For lunch I prepared “Czech traditional burgers” from meat loaf and Pilsner beer and after lunch we mover upstream, when I also presented dry-dropper system, and luckily again caught a trout during demonstration :-) Tiina arrived after lunch by train and she was so exited to be there, that she jumped to river and she was swimming for few metres :-) I have to say that she was not whimpering and she was fishing till evening (next day she came in swimming suit under waders :-) ). In the evening we went for dinner to Český Krumlov to Gipsy pub and we also make short sigh seeing walk.

Next morning we visited Květoňov lake, and Tiina and Aino for the fist time tried fishing from boat. There were some fresh stocked rainbows, so we caught about 30 fish, mainly under surface on roly-poly, the biggest fish get Aino. In the afternoon we returned to river and I took them further downstream, to the place when I had peg with my team during Hanák Open. It was interesting, that in one pool we caught in the second round of competition 10 rainbows (in the first round was caught 16 and in the last one 6),  and with finish ladies we caught in the same place 11. I have to thank you girls and Petry for nice two days and see you next year.

Three friends from Spain

p1320442 I was asked by Daniel Barrachina from Spain for help during short trip aimed on practice on waters where will be the next European championship held, so I arranged accommodation, all documents and I was fishing with them for three days to show them all the competition sectors and also to explain different rules modifications relating to our championship. I picked Daniel, Ruben and Luis at airport up and through short visit in Hanák Shop we were hurried to check the river. We were staying at Penzion Herbertov which will be the main base of the Championship. Guys jumped to water just in front of the Penzion like cormorants and Ruben caught first fish, a nice brook trout. Finally we were fishing all sectors in Vltava, also half day in Květoňov lake, where I rent boat from my friend David (the bet “who catch the last fish pays beer” lost Daniel :-) and I also took them to Devil stones, which had been already closed for fishing from October 1st due to spawning of brown trout, but we were walking along the river and I explained basic tactic in this difficult water. They also tasted our traditional cuisine including Becherovka, Svíčková na smetaně and Czech version of hamburger with big piece of meat loaf :-) .  I hope it was useful for them and I´m really looking forward to meet this friendly guys next year, maybe I will start to study Spanish to understand their flaming discussions :-)

Glomma river, Norway – Eikre-fly Invitational

Říjen 13, 2017 - 9:16 am Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1320190 Erik Eikre invited Hanák Team to first year of the new fly-fishing competition which he organised on the Glomma river in Norway. Franta Hanák offered me a place in team and this was for me the unreasonable offer. Franta more over covered part of expenses and also supplied our team by great Hanák Superlight rods. Honza, the third member of the team, was guarantee of well-being and good mood during the trip, so it was nothing to solve and I took the place in team. We were travelling two days in advance to have some time for practice, and also a little enjoy fishing in the famous Glomma river. On the way from Oslo we were a little mushrooming and in the evening we reached Telneset, where Erik booked for us great fishing hut close to river. It was great to meet Erik and also Cathrine, I knew them from the World Fly-fishing Championship which I organised in the Czech Republic in 2014, so we had a lot of to talk till the late night. If you meet good friends after long time, you feel, like you parted with them even yesterday. As I have organised Hanák Open competition with similar structure since 2006, we were also talking about organisation of this events and I give to Erik some advice.

p1320126 Next morning we decided to practice close the hut as we were first team in the area, so after great breakfast we prepared rods and walked to river, me and Honza crossed river, and Franta with Cathrine stayed at our bank. I found a nice place on the edge between rapids and pool, casted my nymphs, after few seconds the indicator slowed down, so I lifted rod a little in disbelief, and first Norwegian grayling was on!!! First cast, first fish, it was not a bad start :-) . Whole morning, we were looking for different habitats to localise typical position of fish in the river, and in every suitable place (not shallow – not deep, not fast – not slow :-) we caught a fish mostly of size from 35 cm till 45 cm, so it was great. After quick lunch (I cooked three different bags of instant pasta to create an original flavour :-) ) we moved a little downstream and also enjoyed fishing, finally I got also few fish on dry. In the evening, other teams arrived, so we had again a lot of things to talk ….

Second practice day was running also successful, including the grayling of 49 cm caught by Franta (as usually :-) so we were looking forward to the competition. Our secret method? No secrets, nymphs size 14-16, gold, copper, silver of pink beads, pheasant tail, peacock or black body.

p1320249 Competition had similar schedule like Hanák Open held in Wales or the Czech Republic: two members of team were fishing together in one peg and the third one was controlling neighbouring team. It consisted from 6 rounds, so everybody was fishing 4 rounds and controlling 2 rounds. Competition give us all we had expected, many nice fish (it was caught 996 graylings in total, average length of fish was 38 cm, longest fish had 50 cm), great weather (in the morning was -3°C and during the day we enjoyed heavy snowfall :-) , a lot of friendship (controller was always very helpful and gave us good description of peg, when I was controlling Geriatrics team, Stein had problem to make leader in the snow fall, so I made it for him and he caught on it three fish in the last 10 minutes :-) , tight results (differences between teams from 2nd to 4th place was created in fact by one single fish), nice prices (Erik wisely brought nice medals for first 4 teams, as he said, he hates to be 4th :-) . Erik also made the detailed statistic of catches during individual rounds which offered all teams possibility to compare the results and also to improve competition for next year. I hope to be there again, thank you Erik for the great week.

p1320070 Concerning equipment, Franta supplied us by three Superlight nymphing rods 10 ft size 3 and two 9 ft size 3 for dry fly. The rods totally got me, there are soft enough to fish with nymphs size 18 and leader 0,10 but strong enough to fish nymphs size 14 and securely hook and play graylings up 50 cm. In this four days I hooked maybe 120 fish including graylings up 47 cm and I did not lost any single fish. During the practice we started fishing with fluorocarbon Hanák Competition 0,14 mm, but we decided to test also 0,12 mm and we found, that it is strong enough and we used it during whole competition. I twice got to the net couple of fish. For dry fly I used 0,10 mm and it was also OK.

Grant, Kevin and Keith

Říjen 5, 2017 - 10:26 am Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1310932 As every September, my friends Grant and Kevin arrived to enjoy 10 days of fishing on Vltava river. This year, they brought their mate Keith. We met in Hanák Shop in České Budějovice and after quick coffee which cooked Franta we headed to Rožmberk. They stayed in Rožmberk for five days and next they moved to Volary to fish Warm Vltava. I was fishing with them for two days, one in Vltava under Vyšší Brod and one in Lenora, as usually. As Keith was here for first time, I paid him a little more, but he was complete angler, so I only gave him some advice concerning fishing in our rivers and also concerning working with rod while nymphing. It was great fun, I as usually get great crisp-sandwiches for lunch, and we caught a lot of fish of different species (brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, grayling, chub, dace, roach, bleak and perch), both on nymphs and dries. Mainly dry fly fishing in Warm Vltava was interesting, it was cold weather with wind and clear sky, which is usually not the best for dry fly, and the fish were rising in waves, and they were very selective. But the olive emerger size 20 was the solution of problems :-)

The bad luck was, that I lost my fly box with jig nymphs somewhere during first day, but I took it not as a tragedy, but as a great chance for upgrade :-) I´m looking for long winter evenings at vice.
