Extended weekend with two friends

Říjen 15, 2022 - 10:24 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1050553 We cancelled autumnal workshop, but I managed and extended weekend with two friends, Andreas from Germany with whom we already went fishing in May, and Dirk from Holland, who is relatively experienced fly fishermen but who would like to improve some nymphing and dry fly skills. Our base was Herbertov, but first two days we spent on smaller rivers, as a canoeists marathon took part in Vltava and discharge in the river was high.

On Friday we met at Warm Vltava at Soumarský most, our aim was to practice nymphing and dry fly. First three hours were hard, there was nothing hatching and fish were not active, so we caught few fish on nymphs, including some decent dace, but it was nothing special. Suddenly, we saw few sailing boats on the surface followed by first circles of rising fish. Fish were everywhere, under one tree we caught maybe 15 fish, both on dry fly and active nymph. Majority of fish were grayling of size about 25-28 cm, but we caught a few fish over 30. In one pool I also caught nice brown. The last two hours made our day, it´s fishing.

img-20221008-wa0007 Second day I took them to small brook called Polečnice in Český Krumlov, and the aim was to practice fine fishing with light equipment and one fly. I lent my friends my rods size 2, made leaders from 0,10 mm tippet and we used one small nymph size 18. I caught two trouts during demonstration of technique and next we spread to individual pools as river is really small. I thing, that it was very useful for them, as only small adjustments of the nymphing technique brought great results. In the evening, Andreas  tied his first own flies :-)

Sunday we spent in Vltava close to Herbertov and it was really difficult, fish were not cooperating too much. However, if you succeed during hard days, you succeed always, we caught a few fish, Andreas was practising streamer and got two bigger rainbows, Dirk got few rising trouts on dry fly.

Atlas of fish species living on the Vltava 28 and Vltava 29

I went to Vltava 28 above Rožmberk to practice dry-dropper fishing with my new dropper flies, new nymphs tied on Hanák superb jig hooks size 18 and Hanák Superlight 2 size rod. It was warm and a few light showers passed during the afternoon, so great fishing weather. I caught about 30 fish and did not lose any fish, and I could almost make an atlas of all fish species living in river, I caught brown trout, rainbow trout, dace, chub, roach and a monster gudgeon :-)

Next day I went to Devil Stones and I added brook trout and perch to the collection :-) I´m always fascinated by the beautiful colours and variability of patterns of trout in this peaty water.

Maria and Istvan

p1050236 I spent one weekend in the end of June with Maria and Istvan on Vltava River. Istvan is member of the National Fly-fishing Team Hungary and he wanted to practice upstream dry fly fishing and nymphing before the World Championship in Spain. We spent first day in the Warm Vltava in the National park Šumava, fish were active whole day, so we caught a lot of them (brown trout, grayling, come cyprinid fish), mainly on nymph, dry dropper setup and also on dry fly. I also presented wet fly fishing and we caught many of bleak, nice small silver cyprinid fish which realy loves wet flies. In the evening it was opened local pub in the camp in Horní Vltavice and Pilsner beer was a worthy end to the day. We sat in to the car just before the start of a heavy storm :-)

p1050276 Second day we spent in Vltava River above Herbertov, water was a little dirty after rain, but conditions were ideal,  fish were surprisingly rising whole day and they stopped before evening. I did not counted amount of fish, but I guess we could catch 80 fish between us, mainly brown trout, but occasionally also rainbow trout and chub. It was really nice weekend and hopefully it was useful also for Istvan.

One guided day with Andreas

p1050002-kopie I was very busy in spring, but I found time for one guided day with Andreas, beginner fly-fisherman from Passau, Germany. It was a nice day, we caught fish on nymph, dry-dropper system and also on dry fly. During the nymphing session, I was first at the river as Andreas was something tangling, and I did not resist to try a cast to my favourite pool before demonstration of the technique for him … and it was mistake, a rainbow of about two kilos took the nymph, jumped twice and smashed my leader just under the indicator, 0,12 mm tippet was not enough :-) the rule of thumb for guides says that never cast when the client can’t see you, because you’re always lucky on the first cast only !!!!! Next arrived Andreas, found me just making a new leader, the story about the big fish didn’t sound very believable and I could not catch anything at least for next 10 minutes :-) But finally we enjoyed the day, we caught about 50 fish together, and he caught fish on all techniques. I guess that the most educating moment was, that I sat down on the bank and I let him fish a nice pool first and next I shoved him where he left fish :-) He promised to return in Autumn.

Czech Fly Fishing Championships

mcr-lake After one year brake, there were organised both Czech lake and river fly-fishing championships. The lake champ was held on a new trout water in a sand pit in the middle of the Czech rep., the only memorable things were, the it was well organised (organiser martin Ruzha used also boat session from anchored boats) and whole podium was occupied by competitors representing South Bohemia: the winner was Miloslav Hosenseidl, the second was František Kouba (both weaned by Květoňov lake) and third place was taken by Roman Heimlich. The last member of our team, Martin Vlk, who was twelfth, also placed excellently.
p1040982 We organised the River championship on Vltava River at Herbertov and it was also very successful as Team South Bohemia in the same composition again gained gold medal. All girls who will represent Czech Rep. in the first World Ladies Championship to be held in Norway in Summer also attended the Czech champ. and we hope that it was great preparation for them.

We used pegs from Hanák Open, but every competitor had two pegs (about 400 m) to fish, and we also included rotation to make Champ fair as much as possible. It was caught 1593 fish. We will keep our fingers crossed for our teams in all the championship which will be held this year, we plan to attend all of the, World, Euro, World Ladies, World Masters and World Youth.

And we have also good news, the Vltava river will host World Ladies, World Masters and World Youth in 2024 and World in 2025.

p1040072 Maybe last sunny days invited us for fishing, we had been thinking about the Květoňov lake, but probable hatch of olives affected our decision and we decided to go to Vltava River and we did not make a mistake. We met at about eleven and started with nymphs, but it was nothing special, water was really cold after the morning frost, but at about 12:30 we noticed first olives flickering on the water surface and fish responded immediately. I was fishing with dry fly and also with small nymphs, and we caught about 40 fish together, I caught almost all the species living in the river. We also caught few graylings, which is nice. Why is Autumn so short? :-)

p1010006 I had finally time to go to Vyšší Brod (too much work, homework with kids, windsurfing …), I employ my friends – students Vojta and Martin within my scientific project, and after work, we went to Vltava river for evening rise. As it was rainy, hatch of sedge was not strong, but we caught few nice fish including the rainbow monster (0,10 mm hanak flurocarbon, jig size 16, rod Superlight size 3 …. crazy man :-)

Camp with Dutch Team

Květen 9, 2018 - 10:02 pm Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1340378 I was asked by René Koops to organise short weekend camp for Dutch team in Rožmberk. It promised nice few days with friendly people, so I was looking forward to it. We were mainly practising fishing in the Devil Stones, which look easy for leisure fishermen, who always catch a nice trout there, but it is difficult for competitors, who have to catch many fish in a short time and more over after every catch they have to go to the judge. I hope I payed enough attention to everybody and all the attendants finally understand what is fishing in this difficult water about, how to cast, how to construct leaders, how to move, and all of them showed a significant improvement.

p1340333 Fishing in the Vltava river under Vyšší Brod was harder, water which is released from the deeper part of the Lipno lake comparing with Devil Stones is still much colder and fish and all life is not so active. But we caught few fish, mainly on nymph. Dutchmen  asked me also to show fishing with streamer, so brought from Franta Hanák´ shop his brand new line with sink tip, intermediate body and floating running line specially constructed for rivers like Vltava characterised by variable profile with shallows and pools. I prepared leader of 2 metres with two streamers, next I had a short speech about the technique and tactics, and I casted to the deepest pool in the river. To be honest, I did not believe in a success, I had expected that all the rainbows stocked one month ago are already away,  what was a surprise that after few casts I got a strong hit to the line and a decent rainbow of about 50 cm was dancing above the water. I was so frightened that I lost it :-) I had another take, next I lent the rod to John and he lost also one fish. Finally, in an hour, I returned, and I got two good fish to the net. Tino got another nice rainbow one nymph. We both had seen rising them :-)

We really enjoyed the weekend, on Saturday afternoon visited us for the great dinner in Hotel Růže also Thierry Hockers with his friend from Belgium team, and we tasted also some bottles of Chardonay, both from California and Czech vineyards.

On Monday, I  barely could not move, jumping between boulders is not for my old bones and muscles :-)

Lets wake up and back to the work with preparation of the Championship.

Team Finland Ladies

p1320532 I was asked by Maria to help ladies team Finland during practice before EUCH. Maria, Kanerva, Aino and Petri arrived in night and I was waiting for them in České Budějovice and next we headed to Herbertov. We arrived just before midnight, and after we took our things to rooms I opened some Pilsner beer and Slivovice from my Slovak friends and we started “Welcome party” which transformed at midnight to my “Birthday party” and I got nice hand-knit socks in Finnish colours :-) .

Next morning we started fishing at Herbertov, I presented my own setup of nymphing leader and nymphs and also nymphing technique, luckily I caught few browns and brook trouts, thanks my friends :-) . Girls and Petry also caught many fish, foggy morning changed to nice sunny day, fish were also occasionally rising, so it was beautiful morning. For lunch I prepared “Czech traditional burgers” from meat loaf and Pilsner beer and after lunch we mover upstream, when I also presented dry-dropper system, and luckily again caught a trout during demonstration :-) Tiina arrived after lunch by train and she was so exited to be there, that she jumped to river and she was swimming for few metres :-) I have to say that she was not whimpering and she was fishing till evening (next day she came in swimming suit under waders :-) ). In the evening we went for dinner to Český Krumlov to Gipsy pub and we also make short sigh seeing walk.

Next morning we visited Květoňov lake, and Tiina and Aino for the fist time tried fishing from boat. There were some fresh stocked rainbows, so we caught about 30 fish, mainly under surface on roly-poly, the biggest fish get Aino. In the afternoon we returned to river and I took them further downstream, to the place when I had peg with my team during Hanák Open. It was interesting, that in one pool we caught in the second round of competition 10 rainbows (in the first round was caught 16 and in the last one 6),  and with finish ladies we caught in the same place 11. I have to thank you girls and Petry for nice two days and see you next year.

Grant, Kevin and Keith

Říjen 5, 2017 - 10:26 am Komentáře nejsou povoleny

p1310932 As every September, my friends Grant and Kevin arrived to enjoy 10 days of fishing on Vltava river. This year, they brought their mate Keith. We met in Hanák Shop in České Budějovice and after quick coffee which cooked Franta we headed to Rožmberk. They stayed in Rožmberk for five days and next they moved to Volary to fish Warm Vltava. I was fishing with them for two days, one in Vltava under Vyšší Brod and one in Lenora, as usually. As Keith was here for first time, I paid him a little more, but he was complete angler, so I only gave him some advice concerning fishing in our rivers and also concerning working with rod while nymphing. It was great fun, I as usually get great crisp-sandwiches for lunch, and we caught a lot of fish of different species (brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, grayling, chub, dace, roach, bleak and perch), both on nymphs and dries. Mainly dry fly fishing in Warm Vltava was interesting, it was cold weather with wind and clear sky, which is usually not the best for dry fly, and the fish were rising in waves, and they were very selective. But the olive emerger size 20 was the solution of problems :-)

The bad luck was, that I lost my fly box with jig nymphs somewhere during first day, but I took it not as a tragedy, but as a great chance for upgrade :-) I´m looking for long winter evenings at vice.
